In 1874, Clemente Guimarães Menéres had the vision for his family to produce some of Portugal's greatest wines and olive oil and founded this family business. Now, the family resides in the district of Bragança (in the northeast side of Portugal) and has a beautiful estate that sits in the far northeast of the Douro wine region. A steadfast commitment to the harmony of their project is truly spectacular, as they seek balance between their crops, the environment, their people, and their economy. An awareness of the feet on the ground and the divine in heaven guides their practices. Since 1997, their entire production is certified organic and they practice many biodynamic philosophies on about 25 hectares of grapes and 120 hectares of olives. Naturally, they see the benefits of zero additives to the wine and minimal additions of sulfur, and avoid all international varieties to focus only on the local indigenous grapes (where Touriga Nacional in this area shows an intense floral component from the unique shale soils). Romeu is making some of the cleanest and most beautiful dry reds that we have found throughout Portugal!

quinta do romeu branco reserva
gouveio, rabigato, voisinho, arinto The Quinta do Romeu Reserva Branco is the estate’s only white wine, made from a field blend of local white varietals, predominately Douro Gouveio Real, Rabigato, Voisinho, and Arinto. The grapes are hand-harvested and are placed into stainless steel tanks and 500 liter Austrian oak barrels, with native yeasts for a co-fermentation. No malolactic is carried out, and the wine ages in these two vessels for 8 months with regular stirring of the lees, before being bottled. The finished wine has incredible intensity and complexity, with ripe tree fruit character and minerality on the nose, and a palate of expressive fruit and fresh persistence. This white is ideal for weighty white fish, firm sheep cheeses, and fried potatoes. quinta do romeu douro tinto
touriga nacional, tinta roriz, sousão, touriga franca The Quinta do Romeu Tinto is fresh style Douro red blend made from all organic and handpicked grapes (predominately Tourgia Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão, Touriga Franca, and Sousão). All grapes come into the cellar for manual selection and sorting, as the stalks are then completely removed and followed by a gentle foot crushing, with slow and natural yeast fermentation in big granite lagares. After 2 winters in large concrete vats, no fining and a very rough filtering takes place, and the finished wine full of expression and spice. Aromas are youthful and intense coming from the glass, loaded with red fruits and a beautiful floral character. Balanced acidity on the palate accompanied with fruity persistence and soft tannins, make for a very elegant and approachable young wine that is extremely versatile on the dinner table. |
quinta do romeu rosado
tinta roriz, touriga nacional, tinta cão The Quinta do Romeu Douro Rosado is an incredible example of a serious rosé, coming from a region that is known for mainly red wines. All organic and handpicked grapes of Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional, and Tinta Cão come into the cellar for manual selection and sorting. This rosé is not a result of bleeding the estate’s red wines, but made with as much care as the rest. The stalks are completely removed and followed by a gentle crushing, with slow fermentation in stainless steel. The Touriga Nacional is the only variety that sees 6 hours on the skins to give color to the Rosado, as the others are pressed off the skins immediately. The finished wine is light and fresh, yet full of expressive fruit, with spice and lovely texture. quinta do romeu reserva
touriga nacional, touriga franca, sousão The Quinta do Romeu Reserva is the estate’s top red wine coming from all organic and handpicked grapes (Tourgia Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Sausão). All grapes came into the cellar for manual selection and sorting, as the stalks were then completely removed and followed by a foot crushing in old granite lagares, with slow and natural yeast fermentation with all the grapes starting seperately. After fermentation was complete, a bit of continued maceration took place to add extra color and flavor complexities. The first blending occured when the wine was aged for a year in new and used Austrian oak barrels, and then a final blend before bottling this intense yet remarkably elegant red. Floral aromatics from the Touriga Nacional shine through first and foremost, with orange blossom and violets, followed by wild strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries, spice, and toast. A silky mouth feel is fully structured with gripping tannins, gorgeous fruit, fresh acidity, and lovely floral components. |
quinta do romeu 'moinho do gato' tinta roriz, tinta barroca, sousão touriga nacional, touriga franca The 2021 Moinho do Gato is the Menéres family’s freshest example of their Douro reds. All organic and handpicked grapes (predominately Tinta Barroca, and a blend of Tourgia Nacional, Tinto Cão, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, and Sousão) come into the cellar for manual selection and sorting. The stalks are removed and followed by a gentle crushing, with slow and natural yeast fermentation in giant lagares and then the fruit is crushed by a vertical press. However, about 25% is left in whole clusters during fermentation (and done in steel, which later meets up with the rest in lagar). No fining, and a very rough filtration takes place, and the finished wine is expressive and delightful. Ripe red fruits and spice are showcased on the nose, and the palate follows with a beautiful smooth yet vibrant attack. Great persistence of red fruit shine through, along with integrated grape tannin, fresh acidity and playfulness, and a beautifully balanced finish. |
