Azienda Agricola Petrera Pasquale has been making wine in the Gioia del Colle region since the late 1800's. As with many wineries in the area, only 5 generations later did the family begin bottling, and the first bottles of 'Fatalone' were produced in 1987. A winery with intense dedication to the earth, their certified organic farming practices prove to make exceptional Primitivo Gioia del Colle in three different tiers, and one bianco made from the local Greco grape. A series of several biodynamic philosophies lead Pasquale in his practices, and it is not so farfetched to learn that the oak-aged wine is accompanied by calm music, when tasting the lively yet serious wines from this house. All of the wines see only stainless steel during fermentation, and when oak is used, it is always large and very old Slavonian oak. Sulfites are not used during vilification, and only a minimum but stabilizing amount is used at bottling, leading to a purity of fruit, earth, and elegance that can only be experienced on the tongue. Naturally, this line of wines can surely compete with some of the greatest wines of Italy and is serious enough to be drank for years and years to come.

fatalone 'spinomarino' bianco
100% greco The Spinomarino is the only white wine of this estate and comes from just one half hectare of 20 year old Greco vines. The grapes come into the cellar and go into the press but stay on in clusters for about 8 hours until pressed off. The wine then undergoes natural fermentation but does not go through malolactic fermentation after a rough filtering, in order to retain the incredible minerality the area provides its wines with. The result is a beautifully textured wine with scents and flavors of flowers, green apple, exotic fruits, and honey. Pronounced minerality lingers on the finish of this extremely fresh white, lending itself to pair ideally with cheeses, vegetables, and fish. fatalone primitivo gioia del colle doc
100% primitivo The Primitivo Gioia del Colle is a classic expression of the local Gioia del Colle clone. Having spent around 9 months in stainless steel in order to complete both natural alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, it then is moved for 3 months to 750 liter Slavonic oak, and then more time is again is spent in stainless steel to reintegrate the wine before it relaxes in the bottle for 9 more months; this wine’s structure and balance is so beautifully delicate, while remaining quite pronounced. The wine rests in bottle seeing no filtration, and results in tones of black sour cherry, toasted bitter almond, and fresh turned earth, all accompanied by a lively and long finish. |
fatalone 'teres' primitivo
100% primitivo Fatalone’s Teres Primitivo is a unique and delicious light red wine that comes from only the free-run must of the Racemi, which is the juice of the second budding fruit of the Gioia del Colle Primitivo plant (yielding only 1200-1880 kg/hectare), which has less of a full-body character, a more delicate palate, and a lovely sweet and floral smell. The whole berries only spent 36 hours with the skins, continued natural fermentation, and then had 6 months of aging. Teres is a fresh, mineral driven light red wine full of strawberry, cranberry, raspberry, red currant and a green almond aftertaste with a mineral driven freshness and light balsamic notes. A remarkably versatile wine to enjoy year round. fatalone primitivo gioia del colle riserva 100% primitivo
The Primitivo Riserva is Fatalone’s flagship Primitivo that has been built to last for years to come. By law, this wine is to see 24 months aging in order to accomplish the very high standards of this region. The organic Fatalone Riserva spends its first 9 months in stainless steel in order to complete both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, and this then aged for one year in old and large Slavonic oak barrels. At least 15 months of aging in bottle follows, resulting in a wine that is dark and intense, yet so far from being a jammy Zinfandel-like expression of Primitivo. There is massive acidity in the final bottle, which complements the black cherry, rich earth, and toasted wood notes. The wine undergoes music therapy during its time in wood to take advantage of the rhythmic air pressure gently speeding up the breathing and micro-oxygenation of the aging wine. An absolutely gorgeous Primitivo that deserves serious attention, enjoy this wine with rich meats, game, and spicy cheeses. |
