Aexandro was created to fill a niche in the market of Sherries that is really meant to introduce this incredibly complex beverage to a range of wine consumers that have yet to find a passion for the wonderful world of Sherry. Estebe Salgado is from San Sebastien, Spain, but has lived in the Washington DC area since college and started a Spanish wine import company called Tradewinds Specialty. This quickly led to a close relationship with the famous Hidalgo la Gitana Sherry house of Sanlucar de Barrameda. In 2010 he partnered with them to create the Alexandro brand, focusing on a fresh and approachable style that is higher in acidity, a fantastic fit for cocktail programs, and at a sensational value that still gives everything this famous winery has to offer. Hidalgo is focused on the entire production of their Sherry from start to finish, beginning with very sustainable practices and organic farming of their own fruit, natural ferments for the base wines, as well as aging in their century-old barrels in their solera system.Bon Vivant Imports has now partnered with Tradewinds Specialty to bring the entire country this fantastic and very drinkable range of Alexandro Sherries.
alexandro fino
100% palomino The Alexandro Fino Sherry is a fresh and vibrantly young expression of the Fino style of dry Sherry. Coming from 100% Palomino, the grapes were fermented in stainless steel and resulted in an 11% wine that was then fortified with neutral grape brandy to 15%. This alcohol degree, combined with the climate of the region, and the old giant cellars of barrels (Criadera systems) in Jerez, come together to create the perfect condition for the famous ‘flor’ yeast to appear on top of the aging Sherry. By law, Fino must age for at least two years under Flor before it can be bottled. Since this Sherry is meant to be fresher and younger in style, it was bottled not long after the required time (around 3 years), and released for immediate and delicious consumption. The result is expressive on the nose with almonds, Mediterranean herbs, and sea-spray. The delicate and bone-dry palate has briny bitter almonds, crunchy autumn leaves, and the classic ‘Flor’ quality that pairs ideally with so many quintessential tapas foods, mild cheeses, and a range of seafoods. |
alexandro amontillado
100% palomino The Alexandro Amontillado Sherry is a dynamic rendition for the famous ‘middle ground’ of Sherry consumption. Starting its life just like Fino, it comes from only the Palomino grape, which fermented in stainless steel to result in an 11% wine that was then fortified with neutral grape brandy to 15%. This alcohol degree, combined with the climate of the region, and the old giant cellars of barrels (Criadera systems) in Jerez, come together to create the perfect condition for the famous ‘flor’ yeast to appear on top of the aging Sherry. After some time biologically aging, the Sherry is fortified again up to 17% in order to kill off the yeast, and then continues its aging in an oxidative fashion. Once filtered and bottled, this exquisite Sherry is ready for enjoyment. Still very dry in character with the classic and lean influence of its time under Flor, the time it spent oxidizing gives it a round and lovely aroma, texture, and flavor. Sea-spray, earthy mushrooms, hazelnuts, and brine are showcased aromatically and on the palate, letting the Sherry lean more towards interesting food pairings such as white meats, fatty fish, and complex cheeses. |
alexandro oloroso
100% palomino The Alexandro Oloroso Sherry is a complex yet delightfully drinkable approach to this dry and nutty style of Sherry. Being 100% Palomino, the finished 11% wine from the grapes was more full structured and seemed destined to an oxidative path for its aging. It was fortified once to 17% alcohol to ensure that no ‘Flor’ yeast could grow on the aging Sherry, and that it would only be exposed to oxygen. Once the oxidative aging has developed the brown and nutty colored hue from its time in the barrels, and is deemed ready, this Sherry was bottled to showcase its aged and layered personality. Aromas of walnut, toasted almond, and peach pith are backed by elegance and the unique finesse that oxidized Palomino can display. Intense flavors and a velvety persistence fill the mouth with nuts and fruit and wisps of the ocean. This Oloroso is delightful with hearty meats, mature cheeses, or as an incredible layer to a wide array of alcohols and mixers for top-notch cocktails. |
alexandro pedro ximénez (px)
100% pedro ximénez The Alexandro Pedro Ximénez Sherry is a wildly delicious and exuberant dessert style sweet wine made from 100% Pedro Ximénez grapes in the clay rich soils of Cádiz. The white grapes (don’t be fooled by the color of the Sherry) hang on the vines for as long as possible to develop all the sugar possible before turning into wine. The grapes have such an intense concentration of sugar that it has a hard time fermenting, but once it reaches the desired sugar content, the wine is fortified to 16% alcohol for a long aging in the criadera system in an oxidative fashion (thus the dark almost rootbeer black color). The resulting Sherry is stunningly complex, with remarkable sweetness, and a rich date, fig, and black walnut character. Silky and beautifully textured, this PX is perfect for many types of dessert, intense blue cheese, ‘syrup’ for your pancakes, or sauce for your ice cream. |
